What is small caps text?

Small caps are lowercase-height uppercase letters (Sᴍᴀʟʟ Cᴀᴘꜱ). Real typography uses OpenType features to render them; Unicode approximates the look with the 'Latin small capital' character block, which paste-and-copies anywhere.

We also include superscript (ᵗⁱⁿʸ), subscript (ₜᵢₙᵧ), and monospace (𝚌𝚘𝚍𝚎) variants — three related 'small text' options.

How to use small caps on Instagram, LinkedIn & Twitter

Instagram: small caps gives your bio a clean, understated, magazine-editorial look. Great for personal brands and photographers.

LinkedIn: 'ꜱᴇᴄᴛɪᴏɴ ʜᴇᴀᴅᴇʀꜱ' in About sections create visual hierarchy that LinkedIn's plain-text bio doesn't otherwise allow.

Twitter / X: small caps stand out in a timeline without shouting. Common in coding, design, and niche-community bios.

Blogs / newsletters: some newsletter platforms strip HTML small caps but keep Unicode — this makes your intro line pop.

Pro tips

  • The Unicode small-caps block is missing a proper lowercase 'q' — most generators substitute a similar-looking character.
  • Combine small caps with bold for a Vogue-style headline: 𝗦𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗦.
  • Screen readers still read small caps as uppercase letters (S-M-A-L-L C-A-P-S), so keep it short.

Frequently asked questions

Are Unicode small caps the same as CSS `font-variant: small-caps`?

No — CSS uses OpenType font features. Unicode small caps are separate characters. Only Unicode small caps survive copy-paste to apps that strip styling.

Why does the small caps 'q' look weird?

Unicode has no true small-caps 'q' (U+A7AF is a newer, sparsely-supported addition). We use the closest available substitute.

Are small caps SEO-friendly?

No. Search engines treat 'Sᴍᴀʟʟ Cᴀᴘꜱ' as a completely different word from 'Small Caps'. Never use for keywords on a website.

Do small caps work as an Instagram username?

No — Instagram usernames are ASCII-only. Use them in your display name and bio.

What's the difference between small caps and Google Fonts small caps?

Google Fonts uses OpenType — a font feature that renders normal text with small-cap styling. Ours is character-level, so it copy-pastes anywhere but always looks like the same font.
